Created by Baltimore artist Claudia Cameron, “Coastal Intensity” is an acrylic painting with mixed media inspired by the New England coastline. Her work has been exhibited in juried and nonjuried shows, including the Waldorf School (2004), The Hoffberger Gallery (2007), the Myerberg Center (2007, 2010, 2014), The Gordon Center (2008), The Towson Arts Collective (2008), the Women’s Artists’ Forum (2010), the Lodge at Woodloch (2009, 2016), and Sascha’s (2012). Her paintings are in private collections from Florida to Rhode Island. Claudia, a social worker and an art therapist, returned to painting for pleasure two decades ago and is honored to have her work chosen for this book cover, her first. “I’m a big believer in combining the arts,” she says. “This is a book of poetry that is supporting another form of art by selecting a painting for its cover. It’s just so lovely.” Poetry is Life was created for both the writer and reader of poetry.
In 12 chapters corresponding to 12 monthly sessions, you can experience parts of the workshop yourself or just enjoy our words. Read poems easily found on the Internet by beloved poets from William Blake to Terrence Hayes, and from Elizabeth Bishop to Tracy K. Smith. Then, study the prompts—drawn from close analysis of the well-known poets—included in each chapter, so that you can create your own poems. As you read the resulting work from our “Poetry is Life” group, you will see how each voice, including yours, has a unique offering.
Award-winning poet Ann Quinn (learn more here) has led a monthly workshop for Yellow Arrow since early 2020. Poets who take this course range from beginners to those with published books of poetry. We come from Baltimore, San Diego, Charlotte, and Detroit. We have forged a friendship through our poetry and are excited to share our work with you.
