“Nature Springs From Her” by Kalichi Lamar, pyrography on a wood panel, was inspired by the ceiba tree, the national tree of Borikén (Puerto Rico). It is also the sacred tree of her people, the indigenous Taínos. Rather than say more here, we’ll let Kalichi, Taína, and some of our authors explore the significance of “Nature Springs From Her” and RENASCENCE through a series on Facebook Live.
Today’s two contributors are Michelle M. Mead (11:00 am EST) and Jennifer N. Shannon (7:00 pm EST).
Michelle M. Mead is a writer/poet/artist from the Hudson Valley in New York. She’s the Ambassador for the Children’s Writers of the Hudson Valley and leads a writing group under their banner. She’s edited two local zines, and her work’s been in various print magazines (Polluto, Montana Mouthful, Capsule Stories, Words @ Deakin Press, The Chronogram, Blinking Cursor, Thirty-First Bird Review, Trespass, Waterways, etc.) as well as in Ezines (Planisphere Q, Apparatus, Tigershark, EMG Zine, Under the Juniper Tree, etc.). She’s currently working on a middle grade novel about the interning of Italian Americans during World War II.
Jennifer N. Shannon has written three books and has had short stories, poems, and photography published in literary magazines, exhibits, and an anthology. In 2020, she received a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council for independent artists and a fellowship from Martha’s Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing. Jennifer has an essay forthcoming in North Dakota Quarterly and is writing her second novel. Find out more at jennifernshannon.com.
Taína is a Baltimore-based Higuaygua Taíno writer, on a mission to write the Taíno culture into existence the same way the colonizers have attempted to erase it: one word, one Taíno at a time. Her essay “Killing Ty” appeared in Yellow Arrow Journal Vol. V, No. 1 RESILIENCE and was nominated for a 2021 Pushcart Prize. Find out more at TainaWrites.com and connect with her on Instagram @tainaconcurls or on Facebook @TainaWrites.
