Cassie is a lesbian ecofeminist poet and novelist who lives in South Carolina with her wife. Her collection of poetry is her call to action, an invitation to each of us to examine what is within, and how, with the support of feminist advocates as friends, we can make something beautiful out of our “torn parts.” The poems within Swimming in Gilead were written under the loving kindness and acceptance of the Sisters of Gilead. By opening into vulnerability, the poems show readers how to “swim in Gilead” with hope and perseverance even as our rights as women are being ripped away.

Cassie will be in conversation with Casey Catherine Moore for this event. Casey (she/her) is a bipolar, bisexual writer, educator, writing coach, and activist. She holds a PhD in comparative literature from the University of South Carolina with a focus on Latin poetry, invective, and gender studies. Casey’s work, which centers gender, sexuality, and dis/ability, can be found in academic and creative publications, including The Comparatist, Sinister Wisdom, Oyster River Pages, Bourgeon, Samfiftyfour, and forthcoming in The Closed Eye Open. She coproduces and cohosts Homo Stanzas, a queer poetry and comedy series, with Regie Cabico, and she hosts open mics at Busboys & Poets’ Brookland location. Her performance credits include The Kennedy Center, Busboys & Poets, The Nail Salon, Capturing Fire, Poetry Out Loud, Comedy Bonfyre, and the 2022 March for Medicare for All Rally in Washington, D.C. Casey is a 15-year veteran educator who now works as a writing coach and teaching artist with organizations including Georgetown University, Arts for the Aging, Day Eight, and Story Tapestries.
