The cover art, “Shey” by Daryle Newman, a mixed media analogue collage and acrylic on paper, represents finding inner peace within oneself, within one’s own body. According to Daryle, “My art is my freedom to be, a reclamation of self, and an homage to the many that I admire.” The cover art and the words within soar to new heights as those included explore language and their own journeys through their own voices. As a mixed media artist, Daryle’s art is indicative of the interconnectedness between the natural world, feminism, science, climate change, philosophy, politics, and the metaphysical realm to depict the spaces between. Her most recent art is a layering of fact and fantasy about the power of the female to be changemakers, both in the realms we understand as real life and in other-worlds in which she seeks guidance, contemplation, or distraction.
PEREGRINE focuses on illuminating and reclaiming languages, exploring our authors' personal connections with language and home. Sometimes it is the language of their parents that wasn’t passed down, sometimes it is language that they are just now in a place to own. Other times it is the language of nature that is communicating with them or the language of a body that they are getting to know. The guest editor of PEREGRINE, Raychelle Heath, holds a BA in languages from Winthrop University and an MFA in poetry from the University of South Carolina. She uses her poetry and her podcast to tell the multifaceted stories of black women in the world. Raychelle also explores her experiences with the culturally rich communities that she has encountered in her travels.
